'89' | Video Instalation, 2012

‘89’, a collaboration with programmer Mark Santolucito, was inspired by John Cage’s exploration of chance operations and medium. It is a realization of chance in the medium of water, as the transformations to the music (Bach’s Chaconne) and the sequence of ink drops were determined entirely by chance. Cage understood chance as Nature’s manner of operation and ‘89’ seeks, through the construct of ink in water, to embody transformation and constant flux. The ink becomes one with the medium of water as a conceit for the absorption of man into Nature. Read the Artist Statement for more about the piece. The piece was presented at the Convergence/Divergence Gallery Exhibition at Los Medanos College, which ran, Nov. 15- Dec. 20, 2012.
